Singapore – In a significant step towards enhancing Singapore’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, Charge+ has officially launched Singapore’s first Direct Current (DC) fast charger in a Housing & Development Board (HDB) surface carpark. Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, and Ministry of Transport, Dr Amy Khor, officiated the launch event at Boon Lay Place Market which marks a key milestone in the push for widespread EV adoption in Singapore.

Alternating current (AC) chargers remain the dominant charging solution in HDB carparks because AC chargers are adequate for overnight charging and higher power ratings will not be optimal due to the limited power supply in HDB carparks. At the same time, some EV drivers who clock above-average driving distances may need to charge more than once per day and the option of fast DC charging becomes important for such drivers. Therefore the introduction of DC chargers at selected, high-traffic HDB locations aims to improve convenience and accessibility for EV drivers.

After Charge+’s first DC charger at Boon Lay Place Market, Charge+ will expand its DC network in HDB surface carparks to six more carparks located at Beach Road, Bukit Merah, Bukit Panjang, Ghim Moh, Jurong East and Kallang Bahru, all to be completed by mid-2025. All seven DC charging stations are strategically located at neighbourhood centres where there are typically food centres, markets and other amenities. Charge+ aims to provide EV drivers faster charging options, particularly during peak hours at such locations with high vehicle turnover.

To ensure seamless integration into residential environments, the DC charger model was carefully selected for its low-noise operation, making it suitable for installation near housing blocks. Charge+ has to also address challenges around the lack of suitability of many surface carparks due to inadequate power supply or the competing need for underground space from utilities such as water and telecommunications pipes.

As Singapore’s largest EV charging company, Charge+ has been playing a pioneering role in the proliferation of EV charging infrastructure in HDB estates. In 2022, Charge+ was the first company to implement public EV chargers in a HDB multistorey carpark. This was followed in 2023 when Charge+ became the first to implement public EV chargers in a HDB surface carpark. Today, Charge+ operates the most number of EV charging points in HDB carparks, with more than 1,300 charging points deployed across four of the five regions in Singapore — Central, West, North, and North-East.

"We are pleased to introduce the first of many DC chargers in HDB carparks, which affirms our commitment to supporting EV drivers with diverse and accessible charging solutions. The combination of DC and AC chargers in HDB carparks will cater to the varied needs of EV drivers. This new milestone for Singapore is testament to Charge+’s position as a trailblazer for the EV charging sector in Singapore," said Goh Chee Kiong, CEO of Charge+.

The launch of the first DC EV charger in a HDB surface carpark marks a pivotal step in Singapore’s broader EV roadmap. As the nation advances towards a greener future, the strategic deployment of both AC and DC chargers by Charge+ will contribute to shaping a sustainable EV ecosystem in Singapore.
